Campbell Family 

Campbell Family History 1850 -1900

The Campbell Family begins as we know presently, with John and Elizabeth Campbell who are the parents of Alexander, Burrell, William, Jeff, Ethel and ZebbJeff Campbell was born in 1883.  Lora Dawson was born June 7, 1894 in Kingsland, GA to Frank Dawson and Hattie NightingaleJeff Campbell and Lora Dawson married April 14, 1913 in the State of Georgia and had seven children; Virginia (known as “Sweetsie”), Earnestine, Raymond, (known as “Bubba”) Jeff, Casey, Hezekiah (known as “Hezzie”) and Beatrice (known as “Bea”) 

 

The Campbell’s resided in Adris, GA until the 1930’s when Lora moved the family to St. Marys so her sons could work at the fishing dock “heading shrimp”.   Jeff Campbell was a laborer and found work in Stafford, FL in the Orange Grove and later worked with the construction of the Panama Canal.  Lora Dawson was a cook at the “Club House” restaurant where the upper class dined.  Jeff Campbell died at the age of 50 in the summer of 1941.  Lora Dawson Campbell died at the age of 47.  After Lora’s death Virginia moved to Tampa, FL where her Aunt Gurveina lived taking her daughter Alfreta and youngest sister Beatrice with her.  The youngest son, “Hezzie” remained in St. Marys, GA and ,lived with Earnestine and her family.  Later, Jeff moved to Louisiana.  Lora’s father, Frank Dawson was born 1850 and her mother Hattie Nightingale died at an early age.  Lora’s grandfather, Tony “Tommie” Nightingale married Mrs. Harriett and raised Lora and Tommie who were eight and six years old.

Virginia Campbell Aldridge was born August 24, 1914 in Marsh Bluff, GA.  Virginia is known as “Sweetsie” to many.  She is the eldest child born to  Jeff and Laura Dawson Campbell.  At an early age, Virginia moved to Tampa, FL where she met and married Robbie Aldridge.  They raised her daughter, Alfreta and Virginia’s youngest sister Beatrice.  Virginia was active at Greater Bethel Baptist Church and the Missionary Society.  
Ernestine Campbell Sibley was born March 29, 1917 in Adris, GA.  She is the second of six children from Jeff & Laura Campbell.  She married Peter J. Sibley, II in May 1935 and is the mother of eight children; Laura Bell, Peter J. “PJ”, Wallace, Wilbert, Princie Mae, Betty, Ernie “Tiney” and Alexander “Van”.  More modern family lineage of Earnestine’s branch of the Sibley/Campbell Family can be found by clicking on the Ernestine Campbell Sibley's Tree button.  
Raymond Campbell, Sr. was born May 12, 1919 to Jeff and Laura Dawson Campbell in Adris, GA.  Raymond retired from the Pulp Mill later known as the Gilman Paper Company in St. Marys, GA.  Raymond married Janette Williams and had seven children.  Raymond dedicated his life to preach the Gospel and served as Pastor of Wheeler Street Church Of God as well as Church District Overseer for the state of Georgia and Florida.  Raymond, Sr.  died November 16, 1980.  
Jeff Campbell, Jr.  was born January 1, 1921 to Jeff, Sr. and Laura Dawson Campbell in Adris, GA.  Jeff was a fisherman.  After the death of his mother, Jeff moved to Patterson, LA until his health was failing.  He later moved to Tampa, FL to be closer with his family.  Jeff had two sons; James and Jimmy Campbell.  Jeff died February 21, 1992.
Casey Campbell, Sr.  was born October 17, 1922 to Jeff and Laura Dawson Campbell in St. Marys, GA.  He moved to Fernandina Beach, FL and married Francis Edwards.  They had five children; Casey John Jr., Dennis Jerome, Everett Lee, Janice ElizabethCampbell, and Mercedes Elaine Smith.  Casey served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  Casey received many medals for military service and honorable discharge.  Casey, Sr. died July 14, 1996.
Hezekiah Campbell, Sr.  was born August 31, 1924 to Jeff and Laura Dawson Campbell in St. Marys, GA.  On March 17, 1945 He married Vercie Lee Ford.  To this union 9 children were born, Mallie Joseph Stevenson, Jeff, James, Yvonne, Hezekiah Jr.,Evelyn, Sarah, and Ralph.  Hezekiah fought in the Army during WWII.  Hezekiah was installed and very active as a Father within his church, Young Zion Baptist .  Hezekiah, Sr. died September 13, 2009
Beatrice Campbell Barr was known to many as “Bea” was born August 5, 1929 in St. Marys, GA to Jeff Campbell and Lora Dawson Campbell. Bea was the youngest child of 7. After the deaths of her father and mother, Bea moved to Tampa, Fl. at the age of 11 years old to live with her older sister, Virginia “Sweetsie” Campbell Aldridge. At the age of 19, Bea married James Barr, Sr. (now deceased) During their marriage of over 40 years they had 7 children; James, Jr. (now deceased), Lora Ann Barr Wilson, Richard, Gregory, Debora Barr, Jacqueline Barr Strode, and Rita Barr Stevenson. 

Rosa Williams Parris was born May 14, 1905 to Venus Campbell and Lee Williams In Camden County.  Rosa was a domestic worker.  She married Griffin Parris and had two children; George Lee and Emma Pearl who was called “Sister”.  At the age of 10, Emma Pearl died suddenly after arriving home from school complaining of a headache.  Rosa later lost her son George at sea where he worked as a fisherman.  Rosa’s granddaughter; Debra Massey was the daughter of George Lee Parris a blessing until her untimely death.  

Nancy Campbell Wesley was born December 23, 1905 in Adris, GA.  She is the only daughter of seven children born to Alexander and Isabell Barnes Campbell.  She married David Wesley and was a parent to Lawrence Campbell, Louise Carter, Lilla Henderson and Charles Jenkins.  Nancy Campbell died August 21, 1977.
Artley Campbell was born December 13, 1907 to Alex and Isabelle Barnes Campbell in St. Marys, GA.  He married Arneta Bell in 1942.  Artley worked at Gilman Paper Company and was active at the 1st African Baptist Church, as well as the Zion Lodge $#7. Artley died February 12, 1996.
Leconia “Buddy” Campbell was born October 1912 in Kingsland, GA.  He was the sixth of eight children born to Alex and Isabell Barnes Campbell.  Buddy lived mostly in St. Marys until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1943.  While in the Navy, Leconia met and married Bertha Crowder in San Diego, CA.  1944.  They reared four children; Virginia Stitch, Rollene, Karen, and Yvonne Campbell  Buddy sponsored young baseball players at the Sunshine Pony League.  Leconia died June 1999.
Walter Raleigh Campbell was born February 21, 1915 to Alex and Isabelle Campbell of St. Marys, GA.  Walter married Essie Denia Ford and had one child, Nancy Lee Campbell-Johnson.  Walter died April 1987.
Joe Nathan Campbell, Sr. was born July 29, 1910 in Camden County, GA. He was the third son of Alex and Isabelle Campbell.  Joe married Ruth Meyers and had four children; Essie Roberts, Harvey, Thelma Myers, and Joe Jr.  After Ruth’s death, Joe married Myrtle Randolph of St. Marys in June 1945.  Joe died October 15, 1968.  
Irvin Campbell was born February 22, 1921 to Alex and Isabelle Campbell in Adris, GA.  Irvin married Clementine Banks in May 1953 and had six children.  Irvin died November 20, 2003. 
Lawrence Campbell, Sr. was the oldest child of Nancy Campbell.  He was born March 20, 1929.  Lawrence was married to his wife Hortense for over 50 years.  They had two children; Lawrence, Jr. and Martha.  Lawrence Sr. died November 23, 1990.
Essie Campbell Roberts was born in Adris, GA.  She’s the oldest daughter of Joe Nathan and Ruth Campbell.  Essie married Virgil Roberts and had eight children; Leconia, Tommy, Barbara Hubbard, Carol Evelyn Franks, Ruth and Peggy Kennedy.  Essie was a member of civic and charitable organizations in Camden County.  Essie died July 29, 1986.
Joe Nathan Campbell, Jr.  was born in Adris, GA August 13, 1940.  He’s the youngest son of Joe Nathan Campbell, Sr. and Ruth Myers.  Joe served in the U.S. Army until he was discharged and moved to New York City.  Joe Jr. met and married Juanita Cepeda and had four children; Eric, Renee, Sondra, and Sonia.  Joe, Jr. died April 25, 1985.
Nancy Lee Campbell Johnson was born January 8, 1940 to Walter and Essie Ford Campbell.  Nancy married Silas Johnson and had one daughter; Sabrina Johnson Glover and granddaughter Taj Glover.  Nancy died March 21,1992.
Raymond Campbell Jr. was born on November 4, 1942 to Raymond and Janette Campbell.  Raymond, Jr. married Gail Floyd and had one child, Raymond Campbell, III.  Raymond and his family eventually relocated to Tifton, GA to support his wife’s ministry.  Raymond died May 2001.  
Lawrence “LC” Campbell, Jr. was born January 12. 1950 to Lawrence and Hortence Campbell.  LC spent most of his life in St. Marys until he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp for 3 years.  LC served in Vietnam and received several awards for good conduct and National Defense Service Medals.  LC died February 1994.  
Tommy Roberts was born August 9, 1953 to Virgil and Essie Campbell 
Roberts.  Tommy was employed at the Prudential Insurance company for 22 years.  Tommy died in April 1995.
Leconia Roberts was born June 18, 1951 in Fernandina Beach, FL to Virgil and Essie Campbell Roberts.  Leconia attended Matilda Harris Elementary and graduated from Ralph Bunche High School.  Leconia was gifted with a beautiful voice and loved to sing praises for God.  He studied music at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL.  He sing with various choirs and was a wedding consultant.  Leconia died April 25, 1994.  
Luverdia Campbell Davis was born February 25, 1951 to Hezekiah, Sr. and Vercie Lee Ford Campbell in Camden County, GA.  She was the 7th of nine children.  Luverdia attended public school in Camden and graduated from Ralph Bunche High School in 1969.  She was active church member at Young Zion Missionary Church.  Luverdie died February 26, 2004.
Ruth Ann Roberts was born October 10, 1954 to Virgil and Essie Campbell Roberts.  Ruth was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness where she remained a faithful publisher of Kingdom Hall in St. Marys until her death on April 2, 2003.
Fannie Campbell Nutt was born April 21, 1921 to Burrell and Florence Campbell.  She is the third of four children.  Fannie was the mother of three children; Lovata Brown, Evelyn Jerido, and Theoda Campbell (Reini) Fannie was a loyal Church Mother of the Wheeler Street Church of God until she died July 23, 1995. 
Florence Campbell Holland was born February 25, 1904 in Adris, GA.  to the union of Burrell Campbell and Isabell Barnes.  Florence died December 5, 1984.  
Ruby Lee Myers Cave was born to Robert and Lydia Campbell Myers on August 6, 1931 in St. Marys, GA.  She moved to Jacksonville, FL as a child and attended schools in Duval County.  Ruby worked for the Duval County School Board until she retired.  Ruby married Leeroy Cave and had six children; Michael, Campbell, Bernetha Kendrick, Janice Nesmith, Kim Jackson, Brenda Pulliam, Sandra Gardner, and one adopted daughter, Audrey Thorton,  Ruby died September 10, 2003. 
Ethel Campbell Polite Evans was born May 10, 1892 in Marsh Bluff, GA.  Ethel married Mr. Polite and had two children; Frances and Annie.  When her marriage dissolved she moved to Jacksonville, FL and married William Evans.  Together they had five children; William, Jr., Leroy, Ernestine, Betty, and Carl.  Eventually the Evans moved to Orlando, FL.  After the death of Ethel’s husband, she moved to Maryland to live with her daughter Betty. In 1924 during the influenza epidemic Ethel placed herself in harms way by nursing the entire neighborhood.  Ethel died inn 1981.
Carrie Mae Johnson Alderman was born January 14, 1917 to Chancey and Theresa Campbell Johnson in St. Marys, GA.  Carrie was the 2nd of three children.  Carrie was an active member of the First African Baptist Church.  And was involved in community and civic functions.  Carrie had eight kids.   Carrie died November 3, 1981. 
Sarah Agnes Campbell Washington was born April 3, 1928 to Alex and Sarah Smith Campbell in Camden County, GA.  Sarah married Delmon Washington and had six children; Janie Jenkins and Virginia King, Ronald, Delmon, Jr., Melvin, and Steve.  Sarah died June 21, 1964.
Robert “Jimmy” Williams was born January 13, 1903 in St. Marys, GA.  He’s the oldest of three children born to Venus Campbell and Lee Williams.  Jimmy married Thelma and had seven children.  Later he married Muriel Long and reared her children.  Jimmy was active at Greater Trinity United Methodist Church as well as the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Georgia, Zion Lodge #7,  Jimmy died January 25, 1981.
Mercedes Elaine Campbell Smith was born October 6, 1955 in Fernandina Beach, FL to Casey John Sr. and Frances Edwards Campbell.  She was the youngest of five children and an active member of the band.  Mercedes died November 26, 1993.
